La bronquiolitis es una infección de las vías respiratorias bajas más pequeñas (bronquiolos). Aunque hay casos aislados a lo largo de todo el año, lo normal es que se den una o dos epidemias de bronquiolitis durante los meses de frío, entre noviembre y marzo. La causan los virus, sobre todo el virus respiratorio sincitial (VRS) y suele darse con mayor frecuencia en bebés y niños menores de 24 meses.
Aunque la mayoría de los casos son leves y autolimitados, el problema es que mientras que en niños mayores y jóvenes la infección por el VRS produce sólo un resfriado, en cambio, los lactantes y niños más pequeños pueden desarrollar síntomas más severos, al ser sus vías respiratorias más pequeñas y obstruirse más fácilmente.
Durante los meses de frío, es muy importante observar una serie de normas que mantengan alejado al virus:
–Lavarse frecuentemente las manos con agua y jabón
–Cubrirse nariz y boca con el pliegue del codo al toser o estornudar.
–No exponer a los bebés a personas que estén resfriadas o tengan tos; no llevarlos a las guarderías resfriados o con tos; ventilar los ambientes; mantener la lactancia materna el mayor tiempo posible; mantener el calendario vacunal completo para la edad.
-En especial, administrar la vacuna antigripal en los casos en los que esté indicada; desinfectar las superficies que puedan contaminarse como objetos, juguetes, manivelas de puertas, etc.; y evitando la exposición al tabaquismo en todas sus formas.
Prematuridad, un riesgo mayor
La enfermedad es particularmente grave en recién nacidos prematuros, bebés que nacen enfermos del corazón, con las defensas bajas, con problemas musculares o con enfermedades respiratorias. Aunque no hay medicinas para curar la infección, se pueden tratar algunos síntomas y sus complicaciones, como:
- Lavar la nariz frecuentemente con suero salino fisiológico.
- Hidratar al bebé ofreciéndole constantemente agua y en lactantes, dándole más veces de mamar. En caso de alimentarse con biberón, es conveniente reducir la cantidad y darle mayor número de tomas.
- Facilitar en la medida de lo posible la respiración del bebé, poniéndolo en posición semi incorporada.
- Ante la sospecha de que el niño/a respira más rápido o más agitado de lo normal, es necesario consultar al pediatra para que lo examine.
Al médico si…
- Respira muy rápido.
- La piel se hunde entre las costillas o mueve el abdomen al respirar.
- Rechaza o presenta dificultad para ingerir los alimentos.
- Está muy agitado o, por el contrario, muy dormido.
- La fiebre es muy alta.
- Emite un quejido al respirar.
- Presenta color azul en los labios o las uñas espontáneamente o con la tos.
- Hace pausas respiratorias.
